Galaxy-galaxy Flexion: Weak Lensing to Second Order

چکیده

In this paper, we develop a new gravitational lensing inversion technique. While traditional approaches assume that the lensing field varies little across a galaxy image, we note that this variation in the field can give rise to a “Flexion” or bending of a galaxy image, which may then be used to detect a lensing signal with increased signal to noise. Since the significance of the Flexion signal increases on small scales, this is ideally suited to galaxy-galaxy lensing. We develop an inversion technique based on the “Shapelets” formalism of Refregier (2003). We then demonstrate the proof of this concept by measuring a Flexion signal in the Deep Lens Survey. Assuming an intrinsically isothermal distribution, we find from the Flexion signal alone a velocity width of vc = 221±12km/s for lens galaxies of r < 21.5, subject to uncertainties in the intrinsic Flexion distribution. A Method for Weak Lensing Flexion Analysis by the Holics Moment Approach

We have developed a method for measuring higher-order weak lensing distortions of faint background galaxies, namely the weak gravitational flexion, by fully extending the Kaiser, Squires & Broadhurst method to include higher-order lensing image characteristics (HOLICs) introduced by Okura, Umetsu, & Futamase. We take into account explicitly the weight function in calculations of noisy shape mom...

Gravitational Shear, Flexion and Strong Lensing

We present a gravitational lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1689, incorporating measurements of the weak shear, flexion, and strong lensing induced in background galaxies. This is the first time that a shapelet technique has been used to reconstruct the distribution of mass in this cluster, and the first time that a flexion signal has been measured using cluster members as lenses. Weak gravitational shear and flexion with polar shapelets

We derive expressions, in terms of ‘polar shapelets’, for the image distortion operations associated with weak gravitational lensing. Shear causes galaxy shapes to become elongated, and is sensitive to the second derivative of the projected gravitational potential along their line of sight; flexion bends galaxy shapes into arcs, and is sensitive to the third derivative. Polar shapelets provide ...

Measuring Dark Matter Substructure with Galaxy-Galaxy Flexion Statistics

It is of great interest to measure the properties of substructures in dark matter halos at galactic and cluster scales. Here we suggest a method to constrain substructure properties using the variance of weak gravitational flexion in a galaxy-galaxy lensing context. We show the effectiveness of flexion variance in measuring substructures in N-body simulations of dark matter halos, and present t...
